The Kuala Lumpur LRT system uses a system that is a bit unique. When buying the ticket you get a token that looks a bit like a plastic poker chip. To enter you tap this token on the turnstile and it opens. Keep the token handy because when you get to the station you insert it into the turnstile to exit. Can bit a bit confusing if you don't know what is going on so watch the video to know what to do.

MRT said that about 100km of new metro tracks are scheduled to be completed by 2020, which will connect central Kuala Lumpur with its nearby districts. Malaysian authorities are considering the alignment of two other lines that are expected to be announced by the middle of 2013. Siemens CEO of urban transport Sandra Gott-Karlbauer said that the vehicles for Kuala Lumpur are based on the new Inspiro metro platform. "We want to produce a total of 58 four-car trains, designed for fully driverless operation, in conjunction with a local partner company in Malaysia," Gott-Karlbauer said. "Engineering and train components will be built at Siemens' German and Austrian facilities." MRT awarded five contracts worth MYR3.47bn ($1.14bn) for the SBK MRT line in September 2012, including the Viaduct Package V8 Taman Mesra-Kajang, electric trains, signalling and train control system, power supply and distribution, and depot equipment and maintenance vehicles. MRT awarded Bombardier a five-year, MYR281m ($91.7m) contract to supply its Cityflo 650 control system for the SBK Line earlier this month. The Canadian rail manufacturer will be responsible for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of the Cityflo 650 communications-based train control (CBTC) solution for operations on the line. The company will also provide onboard equipment for 58 trains and 16 maintenance vehicles

Don't be intimidated when you first see the rail map; tickets are surprisingly cheap and the rail system is easy to navigate. Kuala Lumpur's metro or rapid transit system consists of 6 metro lines operated by 4 operators. Among the 4 operators, RapidKL and Keretapi Tanah Melayu are the most important rail operators in Kuala Lumpur where Keretapi Tanah Melayu alone carries 30,934,651 passengers in year 2005. Metro lines in Kuala Lumpur are categorized into different types: light rail transit, commuter rail, and monorail. Others such as the Intercity rail and the airport express are obviously not metro systems. It may even be argued that commuter rail services from Kuala Lumpur cannot be considered a metro system because it extends far beyond Kuala Lumpur and its immediate surroundings.
